Historically, the calls of the creation of a Riverina State have been confined to territory within New South Wales. However, today it would be reasonable that Victorian territory along the length of the Murray River be incorporated into a Riverina State.
Secession movements predate Federation with territory of colonial New South Wales (NSW) being ceded to create the colonies of Tasmania, South Australia, Victoria and finally Queensland in 1859. Other pre-Federation agitation sought to cede the Riverina and New England regions from colonial NSW and Central and North Queensland from colonial Queensland. The advent of Federation and events of WWI disrupted the various regional separate state movement and it wasn’t till 1931 that the Riverina Movement was reignited under the leader of NSW Country Party Senator, Charles Hardy.
